Description
In the piano piece A l’assaut des jardins one encounters a tripartite form rich in contrasts, which one has no problem associating with the dramatic tension of the key words of the title: the tumult of scales and cascades of the middle section are bookended by sections of idyllic and sensual sound, whose calm is of course deceptive, as the close of the work makes clear. What connects these contrasting expressions compositionally is the relationship between the horizontal and the vertical, between line and harmony: both dimensions continually overlap, emerge from one another and get overtaken.
